The major part of the stock market slide took place in the first half of the week before key economic indicators were reported. By Thursday stock prices had fallen so sharply that some investors thought values were to be found. While the latest figures show a drop in consumer confidence (who wouldn't be worried about the current state of the stock market?), retail sales were pretty good, not only in June but in the second quarter as a whole.
