Recap of global markets
Europe and Britain
All three indexes - FTSE, DAX and CAC - were down on the week. Investors stood on the sidelines buffeted by conflicting economic data combined with quarter-end profit musings and post-Fed exhaustion. Contributing to the low volume in London was the onset of the summer holiday season and the eating of strawberries and cream while watching Wimbledon.

Asia
After four weeks finishing on the upside at week's end, investors hesitated as they wrapped up trading for the second quarter. Of the six indexes followed here, only the Topix managed to end the week higher. Mixed U.S. data kept investors guessing while the Fed interest rate cut did little to inspire them. The Topix, which has risen for the last five weeks, ended the week above the 900 level for the first time since the first week in October 2002. Both the Nikkei and Topix will register their first quarterly gains since the three months ended March 2002.
