In the past, most consumers were only familiar with the Dow Jones Industrial Average because it was the only index regularly quoted by non-financial news media. Now, consumers and investors regularly follow the Nasdaq composite, along with the Russell 2000, and the S&P 500. The Fed has added the Wilshire 5000 to the list.
