Economic data indicate wide weakness with a continued slump in production. Retail sales are lackluster, but the October spurt suggests that a revival in the consumer sector is possible in the near term. Inflation remains subdued, and the drop in energy prices will help spur consumer spending on other goods and services. Jitters might keep consumers away from the travel and leisure industries for now, but that doesn't mean they won't be spending on "stay-at-home" activities such as videos and electronics.
